Something terrible is happening to baby wild salmon in the Discovery Islands, British Columbia, and the true effects are being seen far away in the province's interior.
As young wild salmon migrate toward the open ocean, they are being ravaged by sea lice from fish farms. But this is not just a Discovery Islands problem - these salmon are from the Fraser River, a system which has seen a devastating trend toward extinction.
The majority of Fraser River salmon migrate north toward the open ocean via the narrow channels of the Discovery Islands, directly through B.C.s highest concentration of fish farms.
We need to connect the dots. These fish farms decide the fate of British Columbia’s largest salmon bearing river.
This project was produced with Tavish Campbell for Alex Morton in anticipation of the renewal deadline for 18 fish farm licenses in B.C.’s Discovery Islands, a major migration corridor, and major bottleneck, for wild Pacific salmon. On December 17th, 2021, Minister Bernadette Jordan announced the phase-out of all Discovery Islands salmon farms by 2022.
